ISLAMABAD: From June to August, many parts of the nation are expected to see exceptional monsoon rainfall, according to a forecast released on Thursday by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

According to the PMD’s prediction for projected monsoon rains, most locations this year had a probability of both regular and above-normal rains. However, the Met Office predicted that central and northern Punjab would likely experience extremely heavy rainfall.

It added that Balochistan was also susceptible to very wet weather, and that southern Sindh might also get torrential rains in the meanwhile. This year’s rainfall in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan is predicted to be average by the meteorological service.

In contrast to the second phase of the monsoon, the department has forecast substantial rainfall in the first phase. “Compared to the second phase of the monsoon, there is a possibility of heavy rains in the first phase,” it stated.

On May 27, the PMD made a prediction that rain was expected in Punjab and the upper regions of the country over the current week, which might end the heat wave that has caused extreme heat across nearly the whole country.

Given that the majority of the country’s plains continue to experience extremely hot temperatures—which in some cities have reached well over 40°C—the PMD has warned of the possibility of sporadic rainy spells in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and a number of Punjabi cities.

The weather forecast had said, “Met office informed that a shallow westerly wave is likely to affect upper parts of the country on May 28 (evening/night).”

If it rained, the extreme temperature conditions in the upper regions were expected to abate, according to the Met Office.
