How Peter Laviolette Was Out-coached By Paul Mauric:
Peter Laviolette’s best coaching moment did not occur during the Eastern Conference Final.
The Rangers signed Peter Laviolette to accomplish what his predecessor, Gerard Gallant, was unable to accomplish: win a Stanley Cup. Lavvy was a failure in that regard, and there are four main reasons behind it:
1. MIS-USING LAFRENIERE: Big Al had become the most effective forward, but The Big Three were failing as a unit. He ought to have been on the helpless power play as a result. Lavvy committed a grave mistake by failing to capitalize on his hottest producer.
2. MIS-USING REMPE: In the playoffs, the Cats defeated the greatest and most formidable club. Matt was the ideal counterbalance to New York’s desire for a large, youthful rugged forward. However, Lavvy handled the enthusiastic newbie as though The Remper was ill. If you’re only going to give him a few minutes of ice time, why even dress the guy? It was an absurd squandering of a player who had greater potential.

3. MIS-USING CHYTIL: Playing Fil at all was a risk, and a poor one at that, because his recovery was – as it turned out – drawn out and unpredictable. The fact that he contributed almost little to the cause is proof positive. Likewise, for Blake Wheeler, the other recovering patient. Make use of him or lose him.
4. MIS-USING THE BLACK ACES: The coach need to have brought in some gregarious youngsters when it was evident that Alex Wennberg, Jack Roslovic, Kaapo Kakko, and Jacob Trouba were skating in mud. For instance, Brennan Othmann up front and Zac Jones on defense are just a few options.
In addition to his dead power play, the coach’s inability to elicit stronger efforts out of his Fat Cat stars was another issue.
Who’s to say Gerard Gallant couldn’t have done better?
Paul Maurice, who was on the opposing bench, outcoached Lavvy in every aspect, including strategy, emotion, and around six intangibles like remarks made to the press.Maurice was a cool-headed, collected, hilarious, and composed character.
Laviolette is the same coach who failed to qualify Washington for the postseason the previous season. For this Cup disaster, Pistol Pete won’t lose his job, but who knows if he’ll perform any better the next year?
