Saudi Arabia announces Eid al-Adha dates

One of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, Dhul-Hijja, began on Thursday, according to Saudi Arabia, which reported the sighting of the crescent.

 

June 16 is Eid Al-Adha, the day when the crescent is seen.

 

On June 15, the day before the main Muslim holiday, Arafat Day, will occur.

 

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Supreme Court of the Kingdom urged citizens to see the moon on June 6 (Dhu al-Qi’dah 29, 1445 AH) in the evening.

Muslims pray collectively, do acts of charity, and sacrifice an animal—typically a sheep—on Eid al-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice.

 

This month is dedicated to performing the annual Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, which is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
