After the world’s greatest democratic exercise, a massive seven-phase election that started on April 19 and completed on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is ahead as India tallies votes.
In India’s lower house of parliament, the 543-member Lok Sabha, a party or alliance needs 272 members to become majority.
According to exit polls, Modi is expected to win reelection for a third term in office, but the opposition coalition led by the Indian National Congress party is hoping to dethrone him.
