Sunday saw Kylian Mbappé announce that he will not be competing for France in the Olympics in Paris because Real Madrid, his new team, is opposed to the concept.

The 25-year-old stated in March that he was eager to compete in his home Games, but clubs are not required to release their players because FIFA does not have the Olympic football competition on its schedule.

Though head coach Thierry Henry kept the door open, Mbappé was left out of a 25-man preliminary team for the Olympics earlier this month.

“I think I [knew] I won’t be taking part in the Games from that moment on,” Mbappé told reporters prior to Monday’s Euro 2024 Group D match against Austria.

“My club’s position was very clear.” it’s the reality, and I acknowledge it as well.

It’s hardly the best way to start an adventure, but in September I’m joining a new team.

“My best wishes are with this French team. Every game will be watched by me. I’m hoping they’ll take home the gold.”

Ten days following the European Championship final, on July 24, the men’s Olympic football competition gets underway and concludes on August 9.
