Marc Cucurella called his role change “nice” and hopes to carry on his strong end-of-season performance with Spain at Euro 2024.

After making a significant financial transfer from Brighton in the summer of 2022, Cucurella has struggled at Stamford Bridge.

During his first season at the club, Chelsea fans even occasionally jeered him.

But the Spanish player who had a stellar run of play towards the end of the season has now become a fan favorite, and he was rewarded with a spot in Spain’s squad for Euro 2024.

Cucurella on his change of role

After tactically switching Cucurella into midfield while the Blues had control under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, the 25-year-old’s fortunes drastically changed.

Cucurella, a Spain international, said that he enjoys playing the new role, which really seemed to fit his skill set and made him look like a completely different player.

I strive to do everything I can to support the team, and if I can play more positions and it benefits the team, I’m pleased to have more opportunities to play.

I believe that I played right back in the early part of the season, and I’ll try my hardest to assist the club win the game as always.

“I’m happy to help out whenever I’m on the pitch, but I really like to play this position [inverted left-back].”
